IPv6 glue in sixxs.net.

Joker offers IPv6 glue - even though I looked previously, I was too
dumb to find the right UI feature to enable it :)
Thanks to R Dicaire, a SixXS user, for pinging us, I looked again and
now was able to add IPv6 glue for ns[123].sixxs.net. at Joker for all
of our domains.
Also thanks to Joker (I didn't know this was a Swiss company, I
thought it was German - I apologize profusely!) for the service.

Home Sweet Home

This week featured the Geo Summit in Lake Tahoe (well, Northstar near
Tahoe). I drove there with some cow-orkers on Monday in a rental
(Saturn Aura). The valley was at 90F, and up on the mountain the sun
was good but the evenings were cold. We talked about all sorts of
maps/earth things, I'll spare you the details [because it is known,
people lose first borns for breaking NDA and I don't want to lose my
particular specimen]. Tuesday we went to the lake for a cruise dinner
and Wednesday afternoon we drove back to the bay. Thursday I took off
to go shopping for books and baby clothes, and went back to the office
for Thirsty Thursday and dinner with the universal search folks.

Today, Friday the 13th, at 4am I stood up and drove to the SFO airport
from Mountain View to fetch a 6am flight to Atlanta. Contrary to what
I had expected (a clean, quick e-ticket boarding) I had to queue for
45 minutes in an otherwise hectic terminal where people were bouncing
around, being late, and upset that they were going to miss their
flight. At 5:50am I passed the screening and walked right onto the
plane to ATL. It had some strong tailwind so it landed almost an hour
ahead of time. The cabin crew even joked around "I just know you think
Delta is always late, but here's proof for you - 46 minutes early, and
we're already at the gate. Eat that!". Another funny one was about the
in flight entertainment - "yes, we know our inflight ent system sucks,
it's broken more miles than it actually works, however, this flight
seems to be on the working miles so count your blessing". There was a
definite 'Jet Blue' feeling I had on the flight. Layover was okay, I
bought a bluetooth dongle for the iPod (brand: wiRevo, model: A100)
and a stereo bluetooth headset (brand: Nokia, model: BH-501), but I
couldn't listen to them until I got home because both of the batteries
need charging before use :)

Marina and Alexis, who had said previously that 8am was too early for
them to come and collect me (whimps!) were indeed waiting for me.
Seeing Alexis through the glass while I was waiting for the luggage
was really nice, but she did not really seem to care (booh!), but once
I was on the Zurich side she warmed up and seemed to remember that man
who tickles her and is playful. Maybe the voice made it better, as the
glass is thick and she might not have hear me cheering.

Got home, had a sandwich, crashed until 2pm and was woken by Alexis at
my bedside - yes this is why I was homesick last week. Parents around
will know what I mean - opening your eyes to a bedside kid smiling
back at you really is special. But I was wasted, so I told her to try
again, which was at 3:30pm, same ritual, but now I woke up. We played
all afternoon, and there were many (drooly) kisses and hugs and
bringing me toys, and then taking the toys from me, and bringing me
another toy. Yaay, Alexis!

!baby - Alexis van Pelt is 495 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes, 10 seconds old

Marina too got on my good side - she had bought Frikandellen,
Kroketten and Viandellen in holland and brought them with her to
Switzerland. So we ate hard core junk food tonight and now I'm kicking
it on the couch with a Feldschlosschen.

IRC Administration change

Today Dennis 'Riedel' VInk approached me explaining that his interest
for IRC has long left him, and because he persistently sees me
following up on EFnet affairs, he asked me to take over the
administration of the server. I joined as irc.efnet.nl co-admin in
2002 when I offered to host the machine; this was after the sponsor
back then, Versatel, which had bought Vuurwerk and then bad things
happened to staff and hobby projects shortly after, had pulled support
for the hosting.

BIT, my employer back then, had and always has had core values which
allow employees to serve whatever they'd like and the company to serve
the internet as a community, even if the service is `awkward'.

I am now admin of irc.efnet.nl, co-founder and oper on irc.efnet.ch,
co-admin on ede.nl.eu.undernet.org, and oper on irc.ipv6.xs4all.nl.
You can reach me on <pim@efnet.nl> or <pim@undernet.org>.

is this thing still on?

OK. I have decided to give blogging another go. This is my startup post, and I've also backported by hand-made posts from http://www.vanpelt.nl/weblog/ The funny thing is that when I went to create a blogger account 'dapke' was already taken. This is a rare name so I looked to see whos it was - mine :-) So now this blog is reachable on http://blog.ipng.nl/ for your ignoration and my enjoyment.

Anyway, I'm in California for business - there's a summit in Lake Tahoe I'm going to. I learned a new word the other day - Boondoggle. No relation.

I flew to SFO over ATL. When clearing immigrations in ATL, something funny happened. After asking me the customary questions, the officer asked me a techsupport question for Earth. I now have to redefine my notion of immigration office employees - they are not all moronic robots.

I got to SFO at 8pm, rented a Saturn and drove to Mountain View. Now blogging at the Googleplex. To celebrate this I'm planning on buying a Macbook Air later today. Boy, it's good to be back in California - the stores are open on Sundays :-)

Dodge W42

I took a rather cool vehicle out for a spin this afternoon. My neighbor
Renouka fixed it for me - there's a guy in my street who owns a dodge
pickup and for my birthday, Renouka asked the owner if he'd mind if I
take it out for a spin. I never thought he'd be THAT easy to convince.
He was like: hey if you like the car, by all means, drive it!

Take a look at my gallery for a photoshoot.

Google

I shall be changing employers in August. Farewell BIT bv, and hello Google SRE!

Nas NoShow!

NAS didn't show up for his european tour. Apparently he did not cancel the
013, nor did his management. I am very disappointed, especially because
Ticketservice does not offer a full refund, making the concert visitors
pay for the negligence of an artist. Shame on NAS, shame on
Ticketservice for making us pay!

I was hanging out at Sioux' place; we were upgrading some boxes and
drinking, when I was suddonly called away because
sum1.kelvin.network.bit.nl [a Summit5i] was failing. I drove to the
office and reset the thing which helped it come back up and go to work
for us once again.

I went home at 02.30 am, and threw the laptop in the hallway before
going to bed. The next morning, Patches came upstairs asking why I'd
left the door open and why I didn't close the cupboards ...

The burglars had taken our xbox, pentax camera, dect phone, my
15" powerbook and Patches' purse. Fuckers.

Insurance Payed - Gear replaced

The insurance company have processed my claim. After waiting 19 days on
the police report, and seeing my claim get lost in the mail, having a
hard time getting in touch with the expert and waiting some more, I
received a letter from them saying they will compensate me for my
losses.

I've replaced Apfelkorn [pb15, 1.5GHz, 80G, 512MB] and replaced my
digicam [Pentax Optio 430RS] with a Canon Ixus 50. Pictures can be
seen in my gallery.
